Arizona Agribusiness Roundtable

We at BHN/Huma Gro® were very pleased to be a sponsor for the Arizona Agribusiness Roundtable on December 4 at the PERA Club in Tempe. This year’s roundtable was titled, “A National Perspective on Agriculture: The Farm Bill and You.”

The Agribusiness Roundtable is a collaborative effort by the Arizona Department of Agriculture and the Agribusiness & Water Council of Arizona, Inc. Established to develop a “collective,” proactive point of view about Arizona’s future, this third annual meeting focused discussion on the importance to Arizona and national agriculture stakeholders of export trade agreements, immigration reform for the farm workforce, and proposed regulations for the 2018 Farm Bill.

Guest speakers and roundtable participants were from a number of national agriculture associations, including the National Milk Producers Federation, National Grain & Feed Association, National Cotton Council, AmericanHort, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, United Egg Producers, Western Growers Association, and the National Pork Producers Council. Also featured were Dr. Barbara Glenn, National Association of State Departments of Agriculture; Dr. Alison Van Eenennaam, UC Davis; Paul Schlegel, American Farm Bureau Federation; Tom Davis, President, Agribusiness & Water Council of Arizona; and Mark Killian, Director, Arizona Department of Agriculture (and member of the BHN Board of Directors).

Global Fertilizer Day is October 13

On Global Fertilizer Day, agricultural professionals gather to celebrate the key role that fertilizer plays in meeting the growing global demand for nutritious and sustainably grown food.

Our growing global population depends on responsible agricultural practices to provide a steady supply of food. Modern fertilizer techniques are an essential part of this sustainable future, and The Fertilizer Institute (TFI) is invested in promoting best practices to help farmers improve their productivity and food nutrition.

Through innovative, science-based programs, like 4R Nutrient Stewardship, farmers can use fertilizer best management practices that offer enhanced environmental protection, increased production, increased farmer profitability, and improved sustainability.

The concept is to use the right fertilizer source, at the right rate, at the right time, and in the right place. When the 4Rs are put into practice, growers are able to achieve higher yields, lower input costs, and less nutrient losses to the environment.

Get involved with this year’s Global Fertilizer Day by visiting tfi.org/globalfertilizerday!

Pay Attention to Sulfur

A new article from Dr. Mike Stewart in Plant Nutrition Today (a publication of the International Plant Nutrition Institute), reminds us that “Sulfur (S) is an important component of a complete and balanced crop nutrition program and has justifiably gained more attention in recent years. Crop consultants and decision-makers are well advised to pay attention to S nutrition and the various factors that influence its availability and level of need.”

High-yielding forage crops such as alfalfa and hybrid bermudagrass remove more S than most grain crops and tend to be relatively responsive.

According to the article, soils containing less than 2% organic matter are most commonly S deficient, and coarse-textured soils are more likely to need S than finely textured soils.

Dr. Stewart states that, “Sulfur serves many functions in plant. It is used in the formation of amino acids, proteins, and oils. It is necessary for chlorophyll formation, promotes nodulation in legumes, helps develop and activate certain enzymes and vitamins, and is a structural component of 2 of the 21 amino acids that form protein.”

Sili-Max® Limits Arsenic Uptake in Rice

Research Report

Research Conducted by: Luisella Celi, PhD, University of Torino, Italy

Rice (Oryza sativa) is the staple food for more than half the world’s population, feeding about 3.5 billion people. Compared with other crops, however, rice accumulates higher amounts of arsenic (As) due to its cultivation in flooded fields under anaerobic conditions. Arsenic is a toxic and carcinogenic element.

Decreasing As levels in the rice grain, particularly the more toxic inorganic forms (As [III] and As [V]) is, therefore, one of the main objectives of rice producers and policymakers. The European Commission has recently set a limit of As content in commercial rice to 200 µg kg-1 for white rice and to 100 µg kg-1 for baby food rice. Hence, it is essential to establish appropriate agronomic practices for reducing As accumulation in rice.

A promising practice is the application of silicon (Si) sources, since Si competes with As uptake at the root level. There are only a few efficient silicon sources in the market that limit As uptake by plants. Therefore, it is necessary to identify efficient fertilizers that are safe for the environment and food quality.

In this study, Huma Gro® Sili-Max® demonstrated its ability to supply rice plants with available Si while decreasing inorganic As content in the grain more significantly than the other tested Si sources. Sili-Max® proved to be a promising Si source not only for supplying Si but also for limiting plant uptake of inorganic As, one of the most toxic elements in rice products.

Latest Edition of the BHN Newsletter, The Solution, Is Available

We love to hear stories from the people who use our products, and a number of those stories are included in this issue of The Solution. We begin with a report from Holden Research and Consulting on how use of certain Huma Gro® products on strawberries led to an ROI of over $3,400/acre. Amazing! Equally amazing is a report from Plant Sciences showing how effective Promax® is at controlling 8 strawberry pathogens. It seems that Huma Gro® and strawberries have an affinity for each other.

In our Probiotic Solutions® section we report on a case study involving a small town in New Mexico that was in need of reducing the sludge in its wastewater treatment system lagoon in order to meet state requirements. After 300 days of using Bio Energizer®, sludge was reduced to the point where the town had regained capacity to better handle the incoming flow and meet its permit requirements without dredging.

On the back page we share some videos out of Colombia, South America, from postings to the Huma Gro® groups on WhatsApp. Any story that involves a mule has got to be interesting, and the video showing hand foliar application of Breakout® on rice from San Jacinto del Cauca does not disappoint.

We also announce new Huma Gro® catalogs in English and Spanish, an updated Huma Gro® Turf catalog, and the launching of a Spanish version of our Huma Gro® blog at https://humagro.com/category/espanol/: We hope to use this blog to bring even more people into the Huma Gro® conversation.

Huma Gro Program Increases Strawberry Yields 13%, With an ROI > $3,400/acre

Based on data collected by Holden Research and Consulting on a trial of Huma Gro® foliar programs on Portola Strawberries in Ventura County, Calif., the Huma Gro® treatment program resulted in both higher yields and a higher percentage of marketable yield than the grower’s standard program, resulting in an overall yield increase of 13%. This yield increase resulted in a return-to-the-farm increase of almost $3,500 more per acre, a 14% increase in dollars back to the farm. Factoring in the cost of the additional Huma Gro® products applied to achieve this yield increase, the return on investment (ROI) was calculated to be 8,226%.

It is recommended that in future strawberry trials, Huma Gro® product combinations be foliarly applied at 2-week intervals and alternate Vitol® and Breakout® in the product mixes.

Bio Huma Netics, Inc., and Mesa Verde Resources Form Strategic Alliance

Bio Huma Netics, Inc. (BHN)—an Arizona company that produces products under the Huma Gro®, Huma Gro® Turf, and Probiotic Solutions® brands—has recently formed an alliance with Reid Enterprises LLC, which does business as Mesa Verde Resources in New Mexico. Mesa Verde Resources is a humic substance mining company that produces, manufactures, and sells humic-acid and fulvic-acid products.

Other than access to a greater range of products, customers from the two companies should see no change in day-to-day operations. There will be no immediate change in personnel at either company, and the two companies will continue to operate separately under separate names for the immediate future.

This alliance is expected to facilitate a synergistic relationship between the BHN lines of agriculture, turf, and wastewater/soil remediation products and the Mesa Verde Resources line of humic and fulvic products for both domestic and international markets. While BHN has previously focused on a fraction of humic substances to extract the Micro Carbon Technology® used as a base for all its liquid products, the combined company will now offer its customers an even greater selection of dry and liquid products that includes MVR’s various formulations of humic and fulvic acids.

Bio Huma Netics has averaged over 20% growth per year over the last 10 years. With the Mesa Verde alliance, combined company sales are expected to increase by 30% in 2017.

California Rescues Orchards, But Leaves Vineyards Holding the Vine

By Nick Cardona

Feast or famine. There doesn’t seem to be any in-between for many California growers. For the past 6 years, northern and central California have been experiencing severe drought conditions. The drought had become so extreme that the government began regulating the water available to farmers and growers throughout the state. These regulations were the first to happen to farmers in California since 1977. Due to the reduction in water rights, many fields had been left fallow.

Fast forward to 2017 and farmers and growers in California are facing the opposite extreme. Record-breaking storms pummeled California, dropping record amounts of rain in the valleys and snow in the mountains. These storms caused reservoirs to fill above capacity and rivers to run over their banks. This flooding has caused massive amounts of standing water in fields, orchards, and vineyards throughout central and northern California. While farmers and growers are thankful for the water, there can be too much of a good thing.

Standing water can very quickly become stagnant due to a lack of flow. This causes the oxygen levels in the water and submerged soil to drop and the water temperature to rise. Standing water can quickly cause root damage to many trees and make them more susceptible to infection and fungus pathogens.

As a result of the flooding and standing water issue, California recently approved emergency applications of fungicides in an effort to combat the potential damage to the trees and orchards. More information about the emergency application can be found here.

The emergency fungicide approval is a big win for many growers in a highly regulated part of the country. The California Department of Pesticide Regulation (CADPR) regulates all applications of pesticides and fungicides in the state and must approve all applications. The current approval does have some limitations and it does not apply to all growers.

The emergency application applies only to orchards with standing water in Butte, Colusa, Glenn, Merced, San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Sutter, Tehama, Yolo, and Yuba Counties. The orchards must also be flooded with standing water that will not flow out of the area and into waterways where it may affect fish or wildlife. Growers may also only use approved products and must follow label directions for applications.

One set of growers affected by the flooding has been left out and not included in the emergency application. Vineyards in the area also have issues with standing water, and the grapes are similarly vulnerable to diseases caused by the excess water. The standing water can weaken the vines and make the grapes more prone to developing powdery mildew or root rot as a result.

It is important that growers who are not able to take advantage of the emergency application take steps to lessen the impact of the standing water. Pumping the water off site is an option, but it can be very costly and may not completely solve the issue as the soil may still be waterlogged and the lack of oxygen in the soil can still cause the roots to die. The waterlogged ground is also more prone to developing soil-borne diseases.

If you are one of the many growers who is not included in the emergency application and are searching for help, Huma Gro® has your solution. Huma Gro® offers Promax®, an organic, OMRI-listed, and EPA-exempt soil fungicide that can be applied anywhere as needed without the restrictions of the CADPR. Promax® works with all crops and has been proven effective on a wide variety of soil-borne diseases including, but not limited to, root rot, crown rot, grey mold, and damping off. For more information on Promax®, click here.

BHN History Video

Bio Huma Netics, Inc.—the company that makes Huma Gro®, Huma Gro® Turf, and Probiotic Solutions® products—was founded under the name Sunburst Mining Company in 1973 by Dr. Jordan Smith, Don Organ, and Delworth Stout. These men discovered a unique oxidized humate that was rich in natural organic compounds and minerals in a mine in the northwestern United States. The founders developed a proprietary process to extract organic acids, valuable minerals, and other organic components from this material. This extract contains the base of Micro Carbon Technology® that is the foundational ingredient used in almost all of the more than 70 products produced by BHN.

This short video narrated by Lyndon Smith, current President/CEO of BHN and son of founder Jordan Smith, tracks the history of BHN from 1973 to the present.
